Plot summary
Elisha James works as a reporter at the Washington Chronicle, where she lands the story that Nate Sterling, a best-selling author and Olympic gold medalist, is entering the presidential race as an independent. His rivals are an unpopular Democratic incumbent and Senator Patricia Turnbull, a Republican who would become the country's first female president if she wins. Elisha shares her work with Nick Booker, the political journalist she idolizes, and tells him what she has uncovered: lottery money is being routed into a Super PAC while public schools go without, and her reporting points to Turnbull's campaign. With the election close, the two journalists team up to trace the money.
