Plot summary
In June 1944, Allied troops wait in southern Britain for the invasion that will take them into German-occupied France. Winston Churchill, the prime minister, is sure the landings will be a catastrophe. He has not forgotten Gallipoli, the campaign he led in 1915, where hundreds of thousands of young men died on the beaches, and he fears D-Day will repeat that slaughter. He looks for a way to halt the operation. General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery want it to go ahead and do not accept his objections, and King George VI is drawn into the argument. Exhausted by the war and troubled by depression, Churchill leans on his wife Clementine.

- Brian Cox was reported in November 2015 to be starring as Winston Churchill in Churchill only after Gary Oldman turned the role down.
- Brian Cox said he talked to military experts at the Sandhurst military academy about Churchill's own plan to invade Europe, and they told him it would probably have shortened the war by six months.
- Miranda Richardson and Stanley Tucci joined the cast as Clementine Churchill and Dwight D. Eisenhower, but on 28 April 2016 John Slattery replaced Tucci as Eisenhower.
