Plot summary
In 1380 England, the priest Nicholas is found with a married woman and flees his village. On the road he comes upon a traveling troupe of players who are easing a sick companion's final suffering, and they seize him as a robber. Once the mistake is explained, they take him on as a player in the dead man's place. Led by Martin, the troupe performs biblical plays in the towns it passes. A collapsed bridge and a broken cart strand them in an unfamiliar district, where a mute woman has been condemned to death for killing a boy, on the word of the monk Simon Damian. Their passion play draws almost no audience, so Martin proposes a different subject: the murder itself.

- Vincent Cassel's character Lord De Guise was based on Gilles de Rais, a real 15th-century serial child killer. Cassel had previously played Gilles de Rais in the 1999 film The Messenger.
