Plot summary
Philip Benjamin has come out to his friends in London, where he works in publishing, but keeps the truth from Rose and Owen, his mother and father, until he decides to tell them. Rose asks for time to take in the news. Elliot, Philip's American boyfriend, shares a flat with Jerene, a PhD student writing a thesis on language and behavior, from the private words twins invent between themselves to a neglected child who copied the movements of construction cranes outside his bedroom window. Derek and Geoffrey, the gay couple who adopted Elliot and raised him, come to visit him in London.

- For its American broadcast on PBS's Great Performances on 24 June 1992, the film was selectively re-edited using alternative takes. Producer Ruth Caleb said the US version had no frontal nudity, semi-clothed actors and an edited pornographic cinema scene.
- After an outcry led by the Rev. Donald Wildmon and his American Family Association, several PBS stations refused to show the film, among them WFYI in Indianapolis, WMFE in Orlando, KEDT in Corpus Christi and KMBH in Harlingen, Texas.
- When Texaco chose not to renew its underwriting for Great Performances right before the film's premiere, the LGBT entertainment industry group Out in Film called the decision "corporate gay-bashing...and blatant homophobia". Texaco said it had sponsored 27 programmes, one more than its commitment of 26.
