Plot summary
Deirdre Burroughs, who wants to become a famous poet and whose moods swing severely, is raising her son Augusten in 1978. His father, Norman, an alcoholic, has moved out. Deirdre sees the psychiatrist Dr. Finch for her mental state, and she sends Augusten to live with him; Finch becomes the boy's legal guardian. Finch heads an odd household: his wife Agnes, who is submissive; his older daughter Hope, who is religious; and his younger daughter Natalie, who is rebellious and a little older than Augusten. Augusten does not settle easily into the Finch household, and he returns home for weekend visits with his mother. Neil Bookman, a thirty-three-year-old patient Finch has adopted, is part of the family as well.
