Plot summary
Morgan is the L-9 project at a rural SynSect site, an artificial being whose synthetic DNA carries nanotechnology, smarter than a human and able to walk and talk within a month of its creation. Risk-management specialist Lee Weathers arrives to assess the project after Morgan stabbed Dr. Kathy Grieff in the eye with a pen. Lee insists on calling Morgan "it." The team, led by Dr. Lui Cheng and Dr. Simon Ziegler, raised Morgan after two failed attempts and mostly treats her as a child; Morgan considers Cheng her mother, while Dr. Amy Menser, a behaviorist, wants to start taking her outside again. Morgan was once allowed to explore outside, which the team now considers a mistake. Grieff defends Morgan despite her injury.
