Plot summary
Howie Blitzer is fifteen, and since his mother died in a car accident he lives in a Long Island suburb with his father, a building contractor who is distant from him. Howie is left largely on his own. His closest friend is Gary, a juvenile delinquent and hustler. Howie, Gary and two other boys their age break into houses around the Long Island Expressway. One night they enter the home of Big John Harrigan, a local man, and John interrupts them.
