Plot summary
In 1809, Richard Sharpe, a sergeant in the 95th Rifles, serves in Portugal, where the British army fights the French. He saves Wellesley from three French cavalrymen and is rewarded with a field commission as lieutenant. The army has no money to pay its soldiers, so Wellesley has arranged a loan from the Rothschild family. James Rothschild left Vienna with a banker's draft and has vanished in the Spanish mountains. Wellesley and Major Michael Hogan give Sharpe his first assignment: to command the Chosen Men, a few sharpshooters attached to Major Dunnett's company, which will search for Rothschild.
