Plot summary
Amled is the son of King Hardvendel of the Danes, and he watches his uncle Fenge and Fenge's henchmen cut down his father and his brother. The killing leaves the prince in a semi-catatonic state, and because he cannot speak of what he saw, he is not killed with them. The bodies are carried home to his mother, Geruth. Fenge tells her he came upon the scene after the murders and does not know who is responsible, and she believes him and leans on him. The crown passes to Fenge, who names Geruth his queen. Amled goes on behaving erratically, and Fenge begins to wonder whether the prince is truly mad or only pretending.
