Plot summary
Terry Bernard is a single father in Providence whose daughter, Angela, has a rare degenerative illness. A husband and wife are killed in a bungled robbery there, and the husband's heart is transplanted into Terry. After the operation, he sees fragments of the dead man's final moments. He picks out one of the robbers and trails him into an alley, and a police detective begins tracking him. Terry wants to find whoever killed the donor, and he also grows close to Elizabeth Clemson, the doctor treating Angela. The donor's memories press deeper into his mind and body, and the robbers share a bond he cannot explain.
