Plot summary
In 1963, Philip Marlowe, a private detective, marries Laura Parker, a younger socialite, and leaves his Los Angeles apartment for Poodle Springs, an upscale desert community a couple of hours away. Laura would rather he stop investigating and live on her money, or join the business of her politically connected father, P.J. Parker; Marlowe opens a low-rent office instead and tells clients he does not handle divorces. A call summons him to a meeting; shots come down the line, and the dead man's notes carry the name Larry Victor. Police arrest him and Laura's connections secure his release. A gambling-club inquiry beyond the city limits leads to a job finding Les Valentine, a photographer with a gambling debt who threatens to expose photographs of a former stripper now keeping company with a wealthy man.
