Plot summary
Alex Cross, a Washington D.C. detective and forensic psychologist, learns that his niece Naomi has been gone four days from her college in Durham, North Carolina, and he travels there to look for her. Local detectives tell him that several young women have disappeared, and the body of one turns up in the woods. In the same city, Kate McTiernan, a physician who also fights as a kickboxer, is seized at home by a man in a mask who calls himself Casanova. He holds the women he takes in a stone-walled room and promises Kate that she will not suffer if she obeys his rules. Kate resolves to escape.
