Plot summary
Frank Moses, a retired CIA black ops agent, lives quietly in the suburbs and tears up his pension checks so he has an excuse to keep phoning Sarah Ross, who works at the pension call center. An assassination squad attacks his house, and he survives it. Fearing that the calls with Sarah were monitored, he travels to Missouri and takes her with him when she refuses to come. In New Orleans he leaves her in a motel room and asks his former mentor Joe Matheson, now in a retirement home, to identify the squad. Joe's information ties the attackers to the recent murder of a New York Times reporter. The CIA has assigned agent William Cooper to hunt Frank down, and Sarah's call for help draws Cooper toward them.

- DC Comics' Hollywood representative Gregory Noveck wanted the comic developed but Warner Bros. was not interested, so in 2008 he was allowed to take the project to Mark Vahradian at Di Bonaventura Productions, making it the first film from DC not produced by Warner Bros. after the purchase.
- Comic creator Warren Ellis told his mailing list that the producers were "all kind of giddy over the casting coups", adding: "Who wouldn't want to see Helen Mirren with a sniper rifle?"
- Director Robert Schwentke reshaped the comic for the screen, saying "It's very funny, which the comic book isn't ... It's not as violent as the comic book," and that he did not think the comic gave him enough for a two-hour movie.
- Red was shot in and around Toronto for nine weeks before ending in New Orleans in late March for the final two weeks of principal photography, with additional photography for a post-credits scene shot in Louisiana in August 2010.
- John C. Reilly was set to star opposite Bruce Willis but exited the role in late December, and in January 2010 John Malkovich was reported to have signed to replace him.
