Biography

Toni Collette is an Australian actress known for playing troubled, multi-faceted women across independent films, blockbusters, and television. She made her film debut in Spotswood in 1992 and broke through as the socially awkward lead in Muriel's Wedding (1994), earning a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Emma (1996) and Velvet Goldmine (1998) before an Academy Award nomination for The Sixth Sense (1999). Further BAFTA nominations came for About a Boy (2002) and Little Miss Sunshine (2006). Her other films include The Hours (2002), Japanese Story (2003), In Her Shoes (2005), Mary and Max (2009), The Way Way Back (2013), Hereditary (2018), Knives Out (2019), I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020), Nightmare Alley (2021), and Mickey 17 (2025). On television she starred in United States of Tara, winning an Emmy, and later appeared in Unbelievable, The Staircase, and Wayward. She earned a Tony nomination for Broadway's The Wild Party and returned in The Realistic Joneses.

A role that slipped away
Collette was offered the title role in Bridget Jones's Diary, but she said no because she was committed to Broadway at the time.
Early training
Collette enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in early 1991, but after 18 months she departed to play Sonya in Uncle Vanya, a Neil Armfield production in which Rush took the title role.
Behind the camera
In that same year, Collette set up the production company Vocab Films together with Jen Turner, her talent manager who is based in the US.
First role
At 14, Collette took her first acting role in a high school production of Godspell. She tried out by singing Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You".
