Plot summary
Gertz funds an experiment run by Ben and Catherine, who leave their university positions in 1977 to prove that upbringing outweighs heredity. The three children are taught at home so the couple can keep the project under control. Gertz also hires Samsonov, a former Olympic athlete and trained psychologist, to help care for them and to log reports back to him. Luke, Ben and Catherine's own son, is steered toward art. Maya, adopted from parents with little schooling, is pushed toward a high academic level and given a special diet. Maurice, whose parents were angry and aggressive, is raised as a pacifist who meditates every day. Gertz arrives every six months to test the children.
