Big break
Hoult was initially reluctant to audition for About a Boy because the lengthy casting process interfered with his schooling, but he joined the early rounds and was eventually cast as Marcus.
A role that slipped away
After the actor cast as Kenny Potter departed A Single Man a few days before filming started, Hoult was eventually chosen for the part. He had already shown interest in Tom Ford's project and sent a recorded audition tape.
Getting ready for a role
Before filming X-Men: First Class, Hoult trained physically and gained weight to play Hank McCoy, and learned a dialect similar to Kelsey Grammer's without imitating it.
Getting ready for a role
To get ready to play a zombie, Hoult and the other actors worked with Cirque du Soleil performers. He said they took their shoes off in a dance studio and made their bodies feel very heavy.
Getting ready for a role
Hoult was cast as Nikola Tesla in The Current War, for which he grew a mustache, attended science lessons about electromagnetism and dynamos, and lost weight on a strict diet.
First role
Hoult made his West End debut playing Mark, the protagonist of New Boy, a coming-of-age play by William Sutcliffe that premiered at Trafalgar Studios. Its ticket sales broke records, mostly credited to his popularity with Skins viewers.
