Plot summary
Jan Vokes works as a supermarket cashier in Wales and takes a second job at a pub while helping her elderly parents; her husband Brian stays at home. When Jan overhears Howard Davies describing a winning horse he once owned, she looks up a breeders guidebook and decides to breed a racehorse. Brian thinks the idea is mad. For £300 the couple buy Rewbell, a brood mare, and Jan sets out to form a syndicate of twenty local people contributing £10 a week. Her pitch meeting looks like a failure until the members come forward, and their colt is named Dream Alliance. Once Howard judges him ready, the Vokeses take him to trainer Phillip Hobbs, who accepts him for a trial.
