Plot summary
Constance and Nina keep watch at the bedside of their mother, Ann Lord, who is dying. Ann begins speaking of people her daughters have never heard of, among them a man named Harris, and they wonder whether her mind is failing. She drifts back fifty years to a summer weekend in Newport, Rhode Island: she was Ann Grant then, a cabaret singer from New York City, come to be maid of honor at the wedding of her college friend Lila Wittenborn. Lila, anxious about marrying Karl Ross, leans on Ann for support. Lila's brother Buddy introduces Ann to Harris Arden, a young doctor long close to the Wittenborn family, and the two connect at once.
