Plot summary
In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock opens North by Northwest to critical and commercial success, but a reporter's remark that he ought to retire troubles him. To recover the boldness of his early work, he turns down other projects, among them The Diary of Anne Frank and Casino Royale, and chooses instead Psycho, a horror novel by Robert Bloch drawn from the crimes of Ed Gein. Alma Reville, his wife and collaborator, has doubts of her own about the project. She comes around to the idea and proposes that the story kill off its female lead early. The studio heads at Paramount prove hard to persuade, so Hitchcock pays for the film himself and shoots it with his Alfred Hitchcock Presents television crew.
