Plot summary
In 2050, with a murderous loan shark closing in, Mickey Barnes and his friend Timo sign on to a voyage to settle the ice planet Niflheim. Timo trains as a shuttle pilot while Mickey takes the controversial post of Expendable, the crew member given the most dangerous jobs because a dead version of him can be replaced through reprinting, a new body carrying his memories. On the way he becomes involved with Nasha, a security agent. Four years on, the ship reaches Niflheim, where researchers have sacrificed several iterations of Mickey to make a vaccine against the planet's viruses. Mickey's seventeenth iteration is dispatched to catch a native lifeform the crew calls a Creeper.

- Because Bong Joon Ho is a football fan, he renamed characters after players: Mickey 17 takes his number from Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Anamaria Vartolomei's character is named after Kai Havertz, and Steven Yeun's after Timo Werner. Bong also claimed "Timo" means "conman" in German.
- To tell the two Mickeys apart, Robert Pattinson gave each a different accent, comparing them to Ren and Stimpy; at the first script reading he imitated the voices of Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O, and Bong Joon Ho told him not to do the Steve-O impression.
