Plot summary
Kristin writes and sells for a cosmetics company and is in a midlife crisis: her son has left for college, she finds her husband with a younger woman at home, and her bosses treat her with contempt. A lawyer named Bianca telephones from Lazio. Kristin's grandfather, her only living relative, has died, and she is wanted at the funeral and the reading of his will. Her friend Jenny calls the trip a chance to start over. In Rome she meets Lorenzo and his aunt Esmeralda, and Bianca's associates Dante and Aldo take her in hand. At the reading Bianca explains that she is consigliere of the Balbano family, a branch of the Sicilian Mafia, and that Kristin's grandfather led it and wished her to succeed him. Kristin demands to leave, and Bianca persuades her to take the role.
