Plot summary
Connie and Carla are lifelong friends who share a love of musical theater. Their performing careers have brought them nothing but dead ends. They keep their hopes up with an act at an airport lounge. When they accidentally witness a mafia hit in Chicago, the two go on the run and land in Los Angeles. Let go from a beauty salon, they disguise themselves as drag queens and try out for a spot in a revue at The Handlebar, a gay club. They are hired because they sing their own songs.

- Connie and Carla was made for $27 million but grossed only $8,085,771 domestically and $3,255,245 in foreign release, for a worldwide total of $11,341,016, well under half its budget.
- Barbra Streisand and Debbie Reynolds are name-checked several times in the film before Reynolds herself turns up and performs alongside Connie and Carla.
