Plot summary

Rose is a serious lawyer in Philadelphia, and her younger sister Maggie cannot hold a steady job, partly because of her dyslexia, and leans on drinking and men. After their stepmother Sydelle throws Maggie out of their father's house, Rose lets her move into her apartment. Maggie struggles to find work and causes problems, including getting her car towed. Rose throws her out after finding her with Jim, a colleague she had been seeing. Days earlier, searching her father's desk for cash, Maggie found birthday cards from Ella, a grandmother the sisters never knew existed. With no home or job prospects, she goes to Deerfield Beach, Florida, where Ella, thinking she is on vacation, invites her to stay.
