- The film set a studio record for Laika, posting the biggest opening weekend in the company's history and beating out 2009's Coraline, while also becoming the second-biggest opening ever for a stop-motion film, behind Laika's own Corpse Bride.
- Laika CEO Travis Knight said the biggest challenge was condensing a 550-page novel into a 90-minute film. An early version kept all five creature species from the book, but Knight found that script hollow, so the team narrowed everything down to the Boxtrolls.
- Composer Dario Marianelli scored The Boxtrolls, the very first animated feature of his career, after being hired in December 2013.
