Biography

Simon Pegg is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter whose breakthrough in Britain came with Spaced, the Channel 4 sitcom he created with Jessica Stevenson and that Edgar Wright directed; his work on it earned a British Comedy Award nomination as Best Male Comedy Newcomer. With Wright he co-wrote and starred in Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World's End (2013), the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, appearing alongside Nick Frost; the pair also wrote and appeared in Paul (2011). Pegg played Scotty in Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016), the last of which he co-wrote, and Benji Dunn in Mission: Impossible III (2006) and later Mission: Impossible films including Ghost Protocol (2011), Fallout (2018) and The Final Reckoning (2025). He appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and voices Buck in the Ice Age series. He received an honorary fellowship from the University of Gloucestershire in 2008.

    Pegg joked that he would not leave the British film industry for Hollywood to do Mission: Impossible III, but he later appeared in that film as Benji Dunn and reprised the role in five sequels.

  2. Early training

    Pegg was part of a comedy troupe during his university years. The group, called David Icke and the Orphans of Jesus, also included David Walliams, Dominik Diamond, and Jason Bradbury.

  3. Behind the camera

    For the 2008 English language re-release of Free Jimmy, a cult 2006 animated Norwegian film, Pegg wrote the dialogue. He received screenwriting credit and voiced one of the main characters in that English version.

    Pegg co-wrote Paul, which follows two young men on a US road trip who meet a comedic alien. The finished script landed on the 2008 "Brit List", a survey of the best unproduced British screenplays, and the film arrived in 2011.
