Plot summary
In Perth, Sandy Edwards is a director at a firm that designs geological software. Her business partner talks her into guiding Hiromitsu Tachibana, a Japanese businessman who is touring mines in the Pilbara desert, in the hope that he will buy the software. Hiromitsu treats Sandy like a chauffeur and seems more intent on the wilderness than on the software, and his reserved, demanding manner angers her. On their first drive out, he spends more time on the phone with friends in Japan than talking to her, and he wants to go further than planned. The sand defeats their vehicle. After attempts to free it, the winch burns out, and Hiromitsu refuses to let Sandy use his phone to call for help.

- The Ryukyuan song Tinsagu nu Hana, about upholding Okinawan identity, is used over the ending of Japanese Story, sung by Shelley Scown with Elizabeth Drake doing the orchestral work. Felicity Collins of La Trobe University wrote that Japanese critics saw its use as contentious, since the song is specifically Okinawan and not generally Japanese, making it seem incongruous in an Australian film.
