Plot summary
In 1990, with the Gulf War underway, 13-year-old Jasira Maroun lives in Syracuse, New York, with her mother, Gail. When Gail's boyfriend helps her shave her pubic hair, Gail sends her to Houston, Texas, to live with her strict Lebanese father, Rifat, who forbids her tampons, keeps her to his rules, and spends his time with his girlfriend, Thena. Her mother will not take her back. In the suburbs Jasira minds the neighbor boy, Zack Vuoso, and finds adult magazines there; Zack's father, Travis, an Army reservist, comes by the house while she is alone.
