Plot summary
Henry James Herman is ten years old and smarter than every child in his class. He was conceived in a petri dish, and Patricia, his mother, has raised him on her own. The identity of his father is the one question he cannot answer. A string of Post-It notes sets him on the man's trail, and the trail leads to Dr. Slavkin O'Hara, who teaches at a university and is bringing up Audrey, his daughter, as a psychology experiment meant to shield her from gender bias. Audrey would rather have no father at all, Dr. O'Hara cannot work out how to make her happy, and Patricia is afraid of losing her son.
