Plot summary

On his way to court, the attorney Gavin Banek is carrying a power of appointment that hands a dead client's foundation to his law firm. Doyle Gipson, a middle-aged insurance salesman and recovering alcoholic, is heading to a hearing where he hopes to win joint custody of his two sons from his estranged wife, Valerie. Distracted at the wheel on the FDR Drive, Banek collides with Gipson's car, offers a blank check instead of insurance information and drives away, leaving Gipson stranded. Gipson reaches the courthouse late and learns the judge has already ruled against him. Banek arrives to find the document missing, and the judge sets a deadline of the end of the day for him to produce it. Gipson has picked the file up and refuses to hand it back.
