Plot summary
Ruby Gillman lives in Oceanside with her family, who are secretly krakens, and she wants to pass as an ordinary high schooler. Agatha, her mother, has made the ocean off limits, a rule that also covers the school prom held at sea. Her friends Margot, Trevin and Bliss urge her to invite her crush Connor, and the ask goes wrong when he lands in the water. Ruby dives in to pull him out, and being in the ocean brings on a change in her. Back at school, glowing suction cups appear on her fingers. Chelsea Van Der Zee, a newcomer in her class, is credited with the rescue.

- Mimi Webb's "This Moment" was a last-minute addition after the scene used Harry Styles' "As It Was" as a temp song; the track, written by DallasK, Lauv, Jacob Kasher and Amanda "Kiddo A.I." Ibanez, was first offered to Lauv, who passed on it.
- Screenwriters Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi pitched the story of a family of sea monsters hiding on land in 2015 to DreamWorks executive Chris Kuser, drawing on their memories of growing up in Oviedo, Florida and Brown's experience as a first-generation Cuban American; the Gillman family is based on Brown's own.
- For Nerissa's hair in the film's climactic battle, the visual effects department created a Fluid Implicit Particle simulation, which was used to simulate the character's hair interacting with the surrounding ocean.
- Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken debuted to $5.5 million, the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any DreamWorks Animation feature film to date.
- After original director Paul Tibbitt stepped down, producer Kelly Cooney Cilella hired Kirk DeMicco, who had just directed Vivo, as director and promoted Faryn Pearl to co-director; Tibbitt was credited under "special thanks".
