Plot summary
Eva is a divorced massage therapist in Los Angeles whose teenage daughter Ellen will soon leave home for college. Her married friends Will and Sarah take her to a party in Pacific Palisades, where she meets Marianne, a poet, and Albert, a divorced father whose daughter Tess is also finishing high school. Albert gets her number from Will and asks her out, and she agrees to a date. Marianne later books a massage with Eva, and the two women become friends.

- James Gandolfini died of a heart attack in June 2013, almost a year after production ended but before the film was released. The editing was already complete, but Holofcener added a dedication to the end credits reading For Jim; Gandolfini never saw the completed film.
- Holofcener's first choice to play Albert was the comedian Louis C.K., who read part of the script but was not interested in the role, which went to Gandolfini instead.
- Small details of the plot were drawn from Holofcener's own life: Albert's guacamole-eating habit was inspired by a story that her boyfriend told her about his ex-wife.
- The film was edited by Robert Frazen, who was Holofcener's boyfriend at the time and who had also worked on all four of her previous films.

The final scene of the film, in which Eva and Albert reunite in front of his house, was not scripted: it was improvised by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini.
