Plot summary
In Melbourne, Errol Wallace works as a consultant who advises companies on their finances. Durmack, a maker of automotive parts, brings him in to review its workforce, and he proposes sweeping layoffs. Then Balls, a moccasin factory in the Melbourne suburb of Spotswood, becomes his client. The owner, Mr. Ball, is genial and looks after the people who work for him, yet a tour shows Wallace shabby conditions, old machinery and workers who take their time. Carey, a young worker, is asked to help with the review, gathering information about conditions and performance, and he agrees once he learns that Cheryl, Mr. Ball's daughter, is helping with it too. Kim Barry, a salesman at the factory, is also interested in Cheryl.
