Plot summary
Justin Kemp, a journalist and recovering alcoholic in Savannah, Georgia, is called for jury duty and asks to be excused: his wife Ally, whose pregnancy is high-risk after an earlier miscarriage, is close to her due date. He is seated anyway in the case of Kendall Carter, found dead under a bridge a year earlier, whose boyfriend, James Sythe, is charged with her murder. Faith Killebrew, an assistant district attorney campaigning for the top job, prosecutes, hoping a domestic violence conviction wins votes. Witnesses place Sythe at the bar that night and say he followed Kendall when she left; the coroner reports injuries from a blunt instrument. Kemp was at that same bar, and no one in the courtroom knows it.
