Biography
Claire Danes is an American actor who has worked in film, television and theater. Born in Manhattan, she drew notice in 1994 as the teenage lead of My So-Called Life, which brought her a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination, and she played Beth March that year in Little Women (1994). Her first leading film role was Juliet in Romeo + Juliet (1996), followed by The Rainmaker (1997), Brokedown Palace (1999), The Hours (2002), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Shopgirl (2005) and Stardust (2007). On stage she appeared Off-Broadway in The Vagina Monologues and played Eliza Doolittle in a 2007 Broadway revival of Pygmalion. She won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the HBO film Temple Grandin (2010), then starred in Homeland from 2011 to 2020, winning two more Emmys and two Golden Globes. Her later television work includes The Essex Serpent, Fleishman Is in Trouble (2022) and The Beast in Me (2025).

A role that slipped away
Danes turned down the female lead in Titanic, a decision reported in 1996, the same year she starred as Juliet in Romeo + Juliet.
First role
At 13, Danes landed her first major role in 1993, working on the TV sitcom pilot Dudley with Dudley Moore. Filming took place at Silvercup Studios in Astoria, Queens.
Early training
At age 10, Danes studied dance with Ellen Robbins at Dance Theater Workshop, took acting classes at HB Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, and appeared in New York City theater and video productions.
Beyond film
Danes recorded an audiobook of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, released in 2012 at Audible.com. Her performance of it won the 2013 Audie Award for fiction.
First role
Danes choreographed her own dance for Kids Onstage, one of the New York City theater performances that launched her career.
Behind the camera
In 1997, Danes wrote an introduction for Neil Gaiman's Death: The Time of Your Life, contributing her own words to the published work.
