Plot summary
Gabe and Karen, food critics with two sons, have been close to Tom and Beth for years. The four plan dinner at Gabe and Karen's home, but only Beth arrives, saying at first that Tom is away on business. By the end of the evening she admits her marriage is over and that Tom has found someone else. Karen believes her at once and renounces Tom, while Gabe argues his friend's side. Years earlier, at a summer home on Martha's Vineyard, Gabe and Karen introduced Tom to Beth. The split unsettles Gabe and Karen, who begin weighing their own marriage against the one their friends have abandoned.
