Plot summary
FBI agent Joe Devine is reassigned to Rhode Island, where he plans a sting against mob boss John Gotti. He poses as a Hollywood producer and searches for someone to front a fake film production. He finds Steven Schats, an aspiring screenwriter and director who works in a cinema, and pitches him the project. Schats has written a screenplay called Arizona, and Devine persuades him to shoot it in Rhode Island instead of its original setting. Producer Fannie Nash is brought in to lend authenticity. Schats tours possible locations and objects to them until he is given a hotel suite. The city tells the production it must hire unionized Teamsters. Tommy Sanz, a local mob figure and Devine's target, forces his way into the arrangement.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Last Shot (2004)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Last Shot is loosely based on Dramex, a real FBI sting operation run by agent Garland Schweickhardt, who recruited aspiring screenwriters Dan Lewk and Gary Levy to unknowingly help ensnare mobsters and Teamsters union officials in a bribery scheme.
- When the operation's crew arrived at its Las Vegas location, it found a genuine film crew already there shooting Nasty Boys, which was ironically about undercover police officers.
- On the first day of shooting in New Orleans, the grip truck ran into an elderly woman's car, and the crew paid her off with hundreds of dollars peeled from a roll of bills.
- During the sting operation's shooting, the crew was once stranded in the desert between LA and Las Vegas by a broken-down Rolls-Royce, one of several real events funnier than the film portrays.
- The real sting operation behind The Last Shot led to indictments against five individuals, several of whom were convicted; the movie itself was shut down before serious filming started.
