SPOILER
After the novel appeared, Maupin's friend Tad Friend, a New Yorker writer, began an investigation, and 20/20 reported that the photo of Anthony sent to supporters was a childhood photo of a New Jersey traffic engineer, who was shocked to find it represented as the face of Anthony Godby Johnson.- Armistead Maupin's novel behind the film grew out of a 1992 memoir he was sent, supposedly written by fourteen-year-old Anthony Godby Johnson, who claimed years of abuse by his parents. Maupin trusted it because it carried a foreword by his friend, novelist Paul Monette, and an afterword by Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.
- Maupin's partner Terry Anderson, who co-wrote the film's screenplay, had occasionally spoken with the boy, and a phone conversation with the boy's mother struck him by how much the two of them sounded alike.
