Plot summary
In 1923, Virginia Woolf works on her novel Mrs. Dalloway in Richmond, outside London. She feels trapped in the house and constantly watched by her husband, Leonard, who runs a publishing business from home to remain close to her. She both welcomes and dreads a visit that afternoon from her sister Vanessa and Vanessa's three children. In 1951 Los Angeles, Laura Brown, pregnant with her second child and deeply unhappy, spends her days at home with her young son, Richie, and makes a birthday cake for her husband, Dan. In 2001 New York, Clarissa Vaughan prepares a party for her friend Richard, a poet with AIDS who is to be honored for his work.

- The film's score by Philip Glass won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
- Richard Schickel of Time complained that "one finds oneself focusing excessively on the unfortunate prosthetic nose Kidman affects in order to look more like the novelist", and wondered why screenwriter David Hare and director Stephen Daldry turned Woolf into a hapless ditherer.
- The story has since moved into another art form altogether: the film and the novel it came from were adapted into an opera in 2022.
