Plot summary
Christmas is three days off, and the Engel household is getting ready. Tom and Sarah have two children, Beth and Max, and Tom's mother Omi lives with them. Max has not given up on Santa Claus, and at Omi's urging he writes a letter to him. Then Sarah's sister Linda arrives with her husband Howard, their children Stevie, Jordan and Howie Jr., their bulldog Rosie and Aunt Dorothy. Tom cannot stand Howard, and the cousins tease Max by reading his letter aloud. Max lunges at them and shouts that he hates Christmas and his family. His father tries to console him, but Max tears the letter up and flings it out his bedroom window. A severe blizzard then swallows the town and the power fails.

- Michael Dougherty had always wanted to do a scary Christmas movie, but the idea did not take form until his friends sent him an e-card featuring the Krampus creature, which was, according to him, "just love at first sight".
- Krampus earned $637,000 from Thursday night showings beginning at 7 p.m. and topped the box office on its opening day with $6 million, then rose 9.9% on Saturday over Friday, a rare occurrence for a horror film.
- The film was originally scheduled for November 25, 2015, but was moved to December 4 so that it would fall closer to December 5, which is Krampusnacht.
- Principal photography began on March 12, 2015 and officially wrapped in May at Stone Street Studios in New Zealand, with the creature effects made by Weta Workshop.
- An unrated extended version called Krampus: The Naughty Cut was released on December 7, 2021 by Shout! Factory, with new interviews, commentaries and featurettes, and runs about four minutes longer than the theatrical edition.

Max awakens on Christmas morning to find his family alive and well, concluding that it was all a nightmare, but the family exchange troubled looks after finding Krampus's bauble among the presents, while Krampus watches the houses he has tormented through enchanted snow globes.
