Plot summary
Art critic Morf Vandewalt attends a Miami exhibition with Josephina, an employee of the Haze Gallery. Rhodora Haze owns the gallery and once played in the punk band Velvet Buzzsaw. Morf has a boyfriend, Ed, but begins a sexual relationship with Josephina. After Josephina returns to Los Angeles, she finds a dead man, Vetril Dease, in her apartment building. She enters his home and discovers many paintings, some partly destroyed. She takes them to Morf and Rhodora, who are fascinated by Dease. Rhodora decides to exhibit several of his pieces in her gallery, and the show is a success.

- Dan Gilroy conceived Velvet Buzzsaw after Superman Lives, which he had a hand in developing, was abruptly canceled by Warner Bros. over its large budget. He felt he had wasted a year and a half on it, then made peace with the idea while sitting on a beach, a moment that inspired the film's final scene.
