Plot summary
Twenty-two-year-old Muriel Heslop lives in the beach town of Porpoise Spit, where her shallow former schoolmates Tania, Cheryl, Janine and Nicole leave her out of their plans. At home, her politician father Bill belittles the whole family. A department store detective catches Muriel at Tania's wedding wearing a stolen dress and has the police escort her out. Deidre Chambers, who runs a marketing business, recruits Muriel, and Muriel's mother Betty signs a blank check for stock. Muriel draws the money out instead and follows her former friends on their island holiday, where she meets Rhonda Epinstalk, another outsider from school. The two move to Sydney together. Muriel finds work in a video shop, calls herself Mariel, and is asked out by Brice, still set on the wedding she has always wanted.

- ABBA only gave permission for their music to be included in the film two weeks before shooting commenced, and until then the filmmakers were considering changing Muriel's favorite band to the Village People.
- Muriel's Wedding grossed AU$2.2 million in its opening week in Australia in September 1994 from 72 screens, at that time the third biggest opening for an Australian film behind two films starring Paul Hogan, no relation to the director, Crocodile Dundee II and Lightning Jack.
- For the role of Muriel, Toni Collette gained 18 kg in seven weeks, putting on the weight in under two months of preparation for the part.
- Muriel's Wedding the Musical incorporates songs by ABBA as well as original music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall; P. J. Hogan wrote the musical's book, Simon Phillips directed and Gabriela Tylesova designed the set and costumes.
