Plot summary
Daniel Murphy, called Murph, and Brandon Bartle, both from Virginia, become friends during basic training. Murph comes from a middle-class family and intends to study at the University of Virginia after his service. Bartle's family is working class and he has no plan for what comes after. Before the two men leave for Iraq, Murph's mother Maureen asks Bartle to promise that he will tell her personally if anything happens to her son. In Iraq they serve under Sergeant Sterling, an older soldier who is troubled.
