Plot summary
Jess and Milly have been close since childhood and still share their lives. Milly has a demanding career and lives in a townhouse with her husband Kit and their two children, Scarlett and Ben. Jess works as a town planner and lives with her boyfriend Jago on a houseboat on a London canal; the couple have been trying for a baby without success. After a long-delayed check-up, Milly is told she has breast cancer. She cannot bring herself to tell Kit, and a week later she confides in Jess. Jess postpones the IVF treatment she and Jago had discussed, feeling she cannot keep trying for a child while Milly is ill, and Milly asks her to help her through chemotherapy.
