Plot summary

Iris Chapman, a timid young woman, signs on as a temp at Global Credit. There she falls in with Margaret Burrell, an assertive, cynical fellow temp who teaches her how to get by, and meets Paula, an aspiring actress who awaits drinks after work and likes to flirt with attractive men, and Jane, who is engaged to marry Derrick. The four become a close group of outsiders in a company that ignores them. Margaret wants the executive assistant post with Milton Lasky, a stressed-out manager, but a newcomer named Cleo wins a permanent job there after a single day. Thefts then begin at the company, and the temps, Margaret above all, come under suspicion.
