Plot summary
Tom Thompson finished an architecture degree a year ago and has yet to leave his mother's house. Ruth Abernathy telephones him with news that Bill, described as Tom's closest friend from high school, has died, and she wants Tom to speak at the funeral. Tom has no recollection of Bill, and neither do the friends he asks, yet he agrees to serve as a pallbearer and to give the eulogy. Around the same time, Julie DeMarco, whom Tom admired from a distance in high school, comes back to town. His remarks at the service confuse Bill's family and entertain his friends, and when he asks Julie out the relatives take offense.
