Plot summary
Marina Barnett commands MTS-42, a ship on a two-year mission to Mars. David Kim, a biologist, and Zoe Levenson, a medical researcher, are aboard with her. Soon after launch, Barnett finds launch support engineer Michael Adams unconscious between two modules. He is an accidental stowaway, and as he falls he destroys a device that removes carbon dioxide from the air. The crew turns to emergency lithium hydroxide canisters, which cannot carry four people. Barnett directs David to raise his algae experiment aboard rather than at the Martian colony. Half the algae survive, enough oxygen for a third crew member. Mission control's only answer is an untested spacewalk out along the tethers to bring back liquid oxygen from the spent upper stage, which it judges too risky.
