Plot summary
Lewis Riley cannot keep a job for long and has no clear direction in life. He finds work at a mental hospital, where the staff want a variety show built around the patients' abilities. At the auditions a manic-depressive patient, Roy, overwhelms him and picks the six performers himself: Ruth, Cherry, Julie, Doug, Henry and Zac. Roy then insists that Lewis direct Mozart's Così fan tutte, an intricate opera in Italian that calls for trained voices. Errol, a nurse, offers a way through: the performers can act out the story in translation while a recording of the music plays. Lewis begins rehearsals with his cast.

- Bruno Lawrence, cast as Errol in Cosi, was taken to hospital with chest pains during shooting and diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer; Colin Friels replaced him as Errol, and Lawrence died on 10 June 1995, a few months later. The closing credits carry an onscreen dedication to him.
- Cosi is loosely based on Louis Nowra's own experience producing Trial by Jury at Plenty Mental Hospital in suburban Melbourne in 1971.
- Cosi was the first Australian film to receive major pre-production investment from Miramax, then a Disney subsidiary; the studio had previously handled only international distribution for Australian films.
