Laurence Fishburne
Biography
Laurence Fishburne is an American actor who has played forceful and authoritative characters on stage and screen. Born in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he began acting as a child and first drew wide attention with Apocalypse Now (1979). Greater recognition came with Boyz n the Hood (1991), and he became known to many for Morpheus in The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), and The Matrix Revolutions (2003). He later played the Bowery King in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). His turn as Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, and he has won six Emmy Awards plus a Tony for Two Trains Running (1992). His other films include The Color Purple (1985), Mystic River (2003), Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), and The Mule (2018).

First role
Fishburne got a supporting part in Apocalypse Now as Tyrone Miller, a cocky Gunner's Mate 3rd Class from the Bronx, 17 years old and called Mr. Clean. Filming started in March 1976, when he was 14, after he lied about his age to win the role.
A first
Fishburne took on the title part in Othello. He was the second African-American actor to perform the role, following Paul Robeson.
Behind the camera
Fishburne took on writing, directing and starring duties for his 1995 play Riff-Raff, staged at the Off-Broadway Circle Rep Theater. Titus Welliver and Heavy D were in the cast.

For most of his early career, Laurence Fishburne was credited as Larry Fishburne, and he was known by that name during those years.
A change of course
During the early 1980s, Fishburne took a job as a bouncer at punk rock clubs, and Cathay de Grande was one of the venues where he worked.
