Plot summary
The Avalon is a sleeper ship carrying 5,000 colonists and 258 crew from Earth to Homestead II, a 120-year voyage. Thirty years in, an asteroid collision damages the ship and wakes Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, 90 years early. He cannot reenter hibernation, and the distance to Earth rules out any call for help. He tries to get into the crew hibernation room, but the ship's security keeps him out. A year alone with Arthur, an android bartender, leaves Jim despondent. He notices writer Aurora Lane in her pod and considers waking her for company, though it would cost her the life she planned on Homestead II.
