Biography

Ian McShane is an English actor born in Blackburn, Lancashire, who trained with the National Youth Theatre and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before making his screen debut in The Wild and the Willing while still a student. In Britain he became well known as antiques dealer Lovejoy, and his earlier films include If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969), Battle of Britain (1969) and The Last of Sheila (1973). He won a Golden Globe for playing Al Swearengen in Deadwood, received Emmy and Screen Actors Guild nominations, and later reprised the part in Deadwood: The Movie (2019). His film roles range from Sexy Beast (2000) and Hot Rod (2007) to voicing Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda (2008), an Annie Award nominated performance, plus Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and Winston Scott in the John Wick franchise. He also released the solo album From Both Sides Now.

  1. Early training

    After joining the National Youth Theatre, McShane went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt were his fellow students.

  2. Beyond film

    McShane put out a solo studio album in 1992 called From Both Sides Now, on which he performed cover versions of popular songs. It made it to number 40 in the UK Albums Chart.

  3. A role that slipped away

    McShane is recognized by science fiction fans for his role as Robert Bryson in Babylon 5: The River of Souls. In a 2004 interview, he said he wished he had turned down the part because the technical dialogue was a struggle.
